Random comic book thought #23

June 3, 2011

So much speculation has run rampant the course of four days from so many points of view that DC damn near broke the internet. In my honest opinion, this is coming from me, why not give them a chance at a fresh start. Unless that fresh start has a 3.99 price tag then I’ll say fuck them. So far, with the announcement of these first 10 issues the only one that’s peaked my interest is the Wonder Woman one. The announcement I’m looking forward to is what will become of the Bat books, and with those I’ll only buy the ones that interest me. Right now, the only Bat books I’m reading are Detective, Gates of Gotham, and Batgirl because how great the creative teams are on them. A lot of what is going on in those books have been determined or influenced by previous events. It’s not to say these upcoming books won’t be influenced by Flashpoint or some 70 years of previous stories. In the course of those 70 plus years most of these characters have been given updates to keep them current, things have been added and/or subtracted on a whim by who ever happened to be the writer or artist on these characters. 52 titles at once is daunting and unprecedented. Hopefully, this will stick and these titles will have the market support.  Because I feel a good portion of these books will fall by the way side.

I’m sure you’ve heard the rumor that Barbara Gordon might be back as Batgirl. Just hypothetically, how would you feel about a “Batgirls” squad comic. Babs, Steph, and Cassie with Babs still as Oracle as a den mother figure. I think if done correctly, I think it could be fun.

By now I’ve seen the new Batgirl title and it looks like Barbara will be making her return. It’s been hinted at that Barbara wants to expand her “network” in some way (much like Batman Inc). Like you said, if done correctly it could be fun, but if they do something like a Batgirl squad I just don’t want it being something like the direct-to-DVD animated film Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman.

Honestly I’m almost numb 2 all this reenvioning stuff, it’s done 2 some extint or another it really just comes off as desperate…that said I still have an interest in several titles; Justice League, simply because I’m a sucker 4 Jim Lee art. Catwoman, but the one that I’m most curious about, but may not buy is the Jason Todd one. Trying 2 fig out is this a villain team or some sorta anti-hero deal. Either way I’m at a loss 4 why Starfire’s w/ the group.
Good 2 see u’re keepin’ your blog fresh, M! I gotta see what comicbookdude’s got cookin’ up. He mentioned he was gonna be refocusing on his blog, as well!

A lot of this I think is the result of when DC went under its corporate restructuring to become DC Entertainment, and Johns/Lee not only got those cushy new executive jobs but had to have in their contracts that they had to be aloud to do comic books (Justice League #1).

I see why there doing it, to take on Marvel, but like Marvel its for short term gain an they don’t seem to think about the long term effects. Also, I think this was more of a now or never attempt at not only bringing in new readers to DC Comics but expanding DC Comics to multiple digital markets. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a DC Comics app on the iPad or DC Comics will be downloadable on PS3 or something to that effect. Anyway, that Red Hood book did strike me as odd as well I think they’ll play it as a anti-hero book, and we’ll probably see a new Outsiders team headed by Tim Drake/Red Robin.

      Thanks for stopping by Phil.
