Random comic book thought #24

June 11, 2011

It’s been a interesting couple of weeks if your a DC fan, hell if your a comic book fan. If anything, DC has gotten people talking about DC. I think I said this before in a previous comment, but I think a lot of this is the result of the corporate restructuring DC went under to become DC Entertainment. A means of streamlining how DC characters are viewed outside the regular comic book readership across other media. Diversity through uniformity. How you see them in the comics is how you will see them in future animated features, TV shows (R.I.P. Wonder Woman), movies, and video games. For example, How you see Batman in the new Arkham City video game looks almost identical to how he looks in the new relaunch books. Of course Green Lantern fits in that frame work as well with the movie and matching game on the way. Also, it looked like they were gearing up to do the same for Wonder Woman with the possibly of a TV show, but as I mentioned early that fell through. Finally, will these new changes bring in new readers? Not in print, and not immediately in digital because I don’t think those who are used to paying 99 cent on iTunes will be willing to fork out $2.99 or $3.99 day-and-date when they can purchase that same thing for a lower price at a later date. I’m sure DC will have a great September, but come October I’m not so sure. Let’s take a look at the 52 titles.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #1: Maybe this whole Flashpoint “event” is just a reason for Goeff Johns to write the Justice League. Jim Lee on art we’ll see how long that lasts before he breaks his own rule of books will not be late. PASS

WONDER WOMAN #1: Like I said in the last post with the release of the first 10 books Wonder Woman was the only book that really peaked my interest. The only thing that is holding me back is Brian Azzarello because his writing for me can be a little hit or miss. The Joker HC-Hit, Superman: For Tomorrow-Miss. Hopefully, he can find a happy medium, keep it coherent. At this point anything is a step up from JMS’ whatever you want to call what he did to that character. I’ll GIVE IT A SHOT

AQUAMAN #1: I don’t think so. That’s Johns little gift to himself. PASS

THE FLASH #1: Manapul did a good job on art duties in his previous run on the character, but I’m not the biggest fan of the character. PASS

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1: One of the two nuclear powered characters getting their own series in this relaunch. Didn’t care before, don’t care now no matter who may be co-writing. PASS

THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #1: I wish this was the only title that Tony Daniel was working on so he wouldn’t be anywhere near Batman. Sadly, that’s not the case. PASS

GREEN ARROW #1: This was mediocre before the relaunch thanks to JT Krul and it will remain the same thanks to JT Krul. PASS

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1: If it’s not Keith Giffen and/or J.M. DeMatteis on the book then it’s not a real Justice League International. PASS

MISTER TERRIFIC #1: From the solicitation he still doesn’t seem like a interesting character. MAYBE

CAPTAIN ATOM #1: See The Fury of Firestorm and Green Arrow. PASS

DC UNIVERSE PRESENT #1: I think Paul Jenkins is a solid writer, but I’m not the biggest Deadman fan. MAYBE

FOUR GREEN LANTERN BOOKS: Of the four, MAYBE Green Lantern: The New Guardians.

BATMAN #1: Everything Scott Snyder’s written has been great, but the only thing holding this book back will be Greg Capullo. I’ll BUY it for Snyder, but it’s a MAYBE because of Capullo.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1: DC’s flagship, DC’s namesake, and who do they give it to? Tony-FUCKING-Daniel that’s who! This is how they treat their namesake? This is not only a PASS but a flatout NO!

BATMAN & ROBIN #1: It should be interesting to see how the Bruce an Damian dynamic plays out, but it got old pretty quick with Dick. MAYBE

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #1: No thank you.

BIRDS OF PREY #1: Throwing a bunch of Female DC characters together on a book called Birds of Prey doesn’t mean they should be called that. PASS

CATWOMAN #1: Not the book I thought Judd Winich would want to do. PASS

BATGIRL #1: Yes please.

BATWOMAN #1: See Batgirl.

NIGHTWING #1: Sure why not. BUY

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #1: This would be the title I thought Winick would be on, but since he’s not. PASS

BATWING #1: See Catwoman. PASS

SWAMP THING #1: BUY

ANIMAL MAN #1: PASS

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1: Hate the title, but it does interest me how Miligan and Janin will pull it off. MAYBE

DEMON KNIGHTS #1: Don’t really care for the Demon. Sooo, PASS

FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF SHADE #1: See Animal Man. PASS

RESURRECTION MAN #1, I,VAMPIRE #1, and VOODOO#1: PASS

LEGION LOST #1 and LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES#1: Not a Legion fan. PASS

TEEN TITANS #1: Would of looked cool some 18 years ago. Now, looks like shit. PASS

STATIC SHOCK #1: I think this will be a cult favorite. BUY

HAWK & DOVE #1: NO! NO! NO!

STORMWATCH #1: This is going to be one freaky three way. PASS

BLACKHAWKS #1: I don’t know, it looks like a cross between Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and G.I. Joe. Also, looks like a proposal for a failed TV show and toy line. PASS

THE MEN OF WAR #1: See Blackhawks

ALL-STAR WESTERN #1: Like the creative team should be interesting. BUY

DEATHSTROKE #1: PASS

GRIFTER #1: I like the art team, unsure about the writing. MAYBE

OMAC #1 and SUICIDE SQUAD #1: PASS

BLUE BEETLE #1: MAYBE

ACTION COMICS #1: Hell Yes!

SUPERMAN #1: I don’t think so. PASS

SUPERGIRL #1: MAYBE

SUPERBOY #1: PASS

Those are my picks.
