Superheroes and hockey?

October 14, 2010

One of the oddest announcements to come out of NYCC was that the NHL will be teaming up with Stan Lee for the purposes of bringing in a younger male audience by creating 30 original hockey-themed superheroes, one for each professional hockey team. The 30 superheroes are apart of the The Guardian Project and Guardian Media Entertainment which is a joint venture between the NHL and Stan Lee that will more than likely include video games and other merchandise centered around the Guardian franchise. The characters will be slowly rolled out leading up to a bigger unveil during the NHL All-Star Game on January 30 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Here’s a teaser:

Didn’t they try this before?

I’m of two minds with this. If it gets more ppl into comics great, but I think most sports fans like their sports straight w/o fantasy elements added. I think it’d be more successful if they just did straight sports bios. The life and times of Wayne Gresky(sp), stuff like that.

This guy from FF #163 didn’t last too long
