Random comic book thought #6

April 24, 2010

They say this is the decade of the writer just like the 90’s were the decade of the artist in comics. But I say those great writers wouldn’t be shit without a half way decent artist. I’m not knocking writers and I don’t want to see a return of the 90’s. I just think there should be a balance. The only thing that matters in the end is a great story, and I’m not seeing that from a lot of the top-selling comic books. (but that’s just me, a lot of those books are carried by their art to make them some what bearable) Because sometimes you have good writing with a alright artist and sometimes you have a bad writer with a good artist and the combinations are endless. For me the difference between a great book, a solid book, and a poor book is a matter of writer and artist combination.

Case in point:

Siege (terrible writing but the art makes the book somewhat readable)

Blackest Night (OK writing with good art makes for an enjoyable read even if it did kind of fall apart toward the middle and end, but that’s beside the point )

I agree with your idea of what makes good comics, but I wonder if this decade will really be remembered as the marketing/event years. Seige,Blackest Night, secret invasion,Civil War,Final Crisis,52,countdown to infinite crisis and all their tie-ins and spinoffs..?

Actually, I would argee with that assessment of the marketing/event years. Because it seems like one after another, after another. It doesn’t surprise me with people feel like they are suffering from event fatigue.
